Overcoming the fears of posting to Instagram so you can get more new clients

I’m not going to ask you to dance.
I’m not gonna tell you to “just get over it” + step out of your comfort zone.

I wanna talk about the fears you’re experiencing that’s keeping you stuck when you really want to post more to Instagram as a way to grow your business + welcome in more clients.

But wait… do you even WANT to be posting on the ‘gram?? Because like Jennie Hastings talks about in this ABMP article, social media isn’t for everyone. There are plenty of other ways to grow your massage practice. Over the summer, in Bolstered, we did the Off Social Social Club - where we spent 8 weeks working on networking + client attraction - all without any social media.

But enough dilly dallying - you’re still reading bc you want to become less scared to post. What are you afraid of?

  • People will judge me.

  • What if an ex client sees it?

  • What if I look awkward?

  • What if people think I'm trying too hard?

  • What if people criticize my body/voice/appearance?

  • What if more people knowing about me means I can't hide anymore?

  • What if people actually respond + then expect more from me?

All totally valid fears. Putting yourself out there in the public eye IS scary. But you’ve proudly declared you want to post more, so we’re going to have to face some of those fears + we’re gonna do it low + slow.

Please meet the Visibility Ladder.

Posting more doesn’t mean you rush in + do a 3 min talking video. We start with low stakes, low visibility + low effort. Ease into it. Give your nervous time to acclimate.

We start at the bottom of the Visibility Ladder - write out a post but don’t publish it. So easy! You can do that!

This could be

  • a list of post ideas you’d like to create

  • gibberish + incomplete sentences

  • bullet points + keywords

  • a proper caption

I just want you to begin thinking like a person who posts.

Then we move up a rung - post a photo of your treatment room.

Your room does NOT need to styled or perfect. Just make sure the table is made up + things aren’t super messy. I understand this isn’t your dream room + there’s so many changes you’ve been meaning to make - doesn’t matter. Your room is just fine + you’re going to post a picture of it bc you are a person who posts.

As you look up the ladder at what’s coming up - what run feels challenging but doable? Do any of them feel like a HARD PASS for you right now?

Continue moving up the ladder at a pace that feels good to you - the goal is to just keep going. When you feel yourself getting stuck, ask yourself what is feeling uncomfortable + how can you take a step back, reduce the visibility so that you feel safe enough to keep going.

Maybe you don’t make it to the top rung - cool. No big deal. Hang out at the level that feels best for you, just keep posting.

Being visible doesn't mean you need to dance on camera, share your whole life, or become a full time “content creator”

And if you want to post more to the ‘gram, you will have to dip your toe into the uncomfy waters but when you begin to freak out, I want you to ask yourself:

What's the smallest, most manageable way I can give my clients the information I want them to have?

Bc you get to choose how you show up. And you can do that without forcing yourself past your boundaries.

The goal is to find a level of visibility that supports the business you want to build while still feeling like you.

You can be nervous.

You can go slow.

You can practice.

And you can also decide that some forms of visibility aren't for you.
